Dr John Cooper Clarke Plus support from Toria Garbutt This event is strictly 16+ We are delighted to be welcoming Britain’s best loved and most important performance poet to the opening weekend of Morley Arts Festival in the unique surroundings of the Alexandra Hall. John Cooper Clarke is as vital now as he was in the 70s; His biting, satirical, political and very funny verse, delivered in a unique rapid-fire performance style, resonated with the punk movement. JCC toured with all the seminal bands; The Sex Pistols, The Clash & Buzzcocks, and in the USA with Elvis Costello. He began to draw large crowds in his own right. Joy Division were proud to frequently support JCC and New Order later opened for him on their first Australian tour. Today, JCC is as relevant and vibrant as ever, and his influence just as visible on today’s pop culture. Aside from his trademark ‘look’ continuing to resonate with fashionistas young and old, and his poetry included on national curriculum syllabus, his effect on modern music is huge. His influence can be heard within the keen social observations of the Arctic Monkeys and Plan B. These collaborations mean that John has been involved in 2 global number 1 albums in the last 2 years. His latest show, currently touring across the UK and Europe, is a mix of classic verse, extraordinary new material, hilarious ponderings on modern life, good honest gags, riffs and chat - a chance to witness a living legend at the top of this game. JCC had his own documentary “Evidently… John Cooper Clarke” networked on BBC 4 in the UK. He regularly features on BBC TV and radio, as a presenter, performer and a socio-cultural commentator. JCC regularly tours throughout Europe and Australasia. As the hardest working man in show business he still averages over 100 shows a year worldwide. No bigger accolade and platitude of his work is that he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in July 2013 by the University Of Salford. He is studied by many college and university students throughout the world, all ensuring that he will be forever ingrained in the psyche of the world’s youth. Toria Garbutt is a spoken word artist from Knottingley - a deprived ex-mining town in West Yorkshire. From as young as 9 she kept a diary, and wrote poetry in parallel. Her resulting début album 'Hot Plastic Moon' is an incredibly visceral and engaging collection of confessional, observational and character based punk poetry. With a punk heritage, a staccato heartbeat and a unique flair for storytelling, her work is brutally honest yet breathtakingly beautiful. "These are confessional stories about love, heartbreak and addiction. Getting them off my chest helps me to stay sane. Some of my poetry is hard hitting and dark but there is hope and beauty in there too. On a personal level I suppose it's partly about getting closure." As well as the CD releases this will offer a total of 20 perks, including signed and framed prints, screen printed tote bags and commissioned poems. The album is also being launched in association with A Firm Of Poets; a nationally established spoken word organisation which provided Toria with several platforms and ultimatey paved the way to this release. |
